Nitrous Oxide

Nacogdoches Women’s Center cares about your comfort, and we’re excited to announce a new option for patients who experience anxiety or pain during certain procedures or exams. Patients can now choose mild sedation using nitrous oxide, commonly known as “laughing gas,” for a variety of procedures, including IUD insertion, colposcopy, endometrial biopsy or routine pelvic exams.

Nitrous oxide is a safe, fast-acting gas that you inhale through a mask. Its calming effect can ease visit anxiety, helping patients relax and manage discomfort. The experience is entirely patient-controlled, and the gas begins to take effect after a few breaths. You remain conscious and able to communicate with your doctor, and the effects wear off quickly. There is no lengthy recovery period and no need for a driver.

“For many women, these necessary exams and procedures can be challenging,” Kristin Reese, RN, FNP-C said. “In some cases, women may avoid visiting their gynecologist because they feel uneasy or uncomfortable. Nitrous oxide is a safe, simple way to ease that anxiety and give the patient peace of mind. Many are already familiar with it, either from childbirth or from their dentist. We want our patients to be comfortable, and we’re excited to offer them this option.”

Nitrous oxide has been safely used in medical settings for years, and most patients experience a pleasant, calming sensation. Some may feel slightly dizzy or light-headed for a short period, but those sensations subside quickly once the procedure is over. Nitrous oxide may not be suitable for everyone. Be sure to discuss your medical history, including any medications you are taking, with your provider.
